| Oct. 5th, 2007 11:07 am Jesus likes the rope I've decided I'm going to make it a point to update this thing more often. Not because I'm an attention whore who wants people to read it, but because I thoroughly enjoy going back and reading entries from months or years ago. Kind of a snapshot of what the hell I was doing at the time. Though I suppose that's the point of a ... journal? Whatever.
So, money's super tight right now. We're going from 4 roommates to 3, so I'll have to pay more at home, and my other high payments aren't going to be lowering for years (just 3 years left on my car, but about 29 1/2 left on the student loans! woohoo!). Also, my credit card is beyond maxed out, and I need to whittle that down (good ol' unemployment started that habit, and I never really stopped spending money like I had it...). Anyway, my point is -- I need to get an additional job to make ends meet a little better. Seeing as I'd rather kill myself than work in a restaurant again, I'm taking an approach I should have taken years ago: I'm going to record an acoustic demo and shop it around to all the local bars and coffee shops and try to play out a couple nights a week. For most places, I probably don't necessarily need a demo, but it'll make me feel better about it. Plus it gives me a goal to work towards...
I went to Pointfest the other day with Mom, Mario, Jo, and my brothers... Chelsea was the only one not there, which was odd. I didn't care for most of the bands, but Mom bought me a ticket for my birthday and I really wanted to see Sum 41, and they told me I'd really dig Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace. This was true. However, the other cookie cutter radio rock bands bored me to tears, so it's a good thing the company was good! I sent my 15 year old brother up crowdsurfing during Sum 41's set, as well as my cousins Chris & Ben. It was pretty spectacular - Mom was jealous.
Last Saturday, I met up with Dad at one of his Indian group things where they had a food booth set up. I went to make an ice run at the local New Melle convenience store. Apparently I had taken up part of this biker's spot for about 30 seconds, and he, being a hillbilly, made a big deal out of it. "What the fuck is wrong with people today? Just cuz I've got a fuckin' bike, it's like I can't get a whole spot! I always park in this spot, why can't I have a whole spot? Fuckin' people, what the hell..." and he just kept going, not making much sense, looking at me like I had some sort of response. My only response was getting in my car and leaving him the hell alone because if there's one thing angry hillbillies know how to do, it's fight. I didn't feel like dying over a fucking hoosier's stupidity. Who's laughin' now?
I'm going to be recording Tommy Pini's band starting next week. From what I can tell so far, they're not bad at all for a crew of freshmen in high school! We'll see how this goes, they want to record a whole 10 song album.
I heard "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" the other day, and it prompted me to look up the story behind it. I came across this website that presents Dan Rather's insane assailant's story as fact. It's pretty spectacular.
Okay, back to weork. PEACE OFF. Current Mood: quixotic

| Sep. 21st, 2007 10:44 am I never realized how awesome these lyrics were... It doesn't matter what I say So long as I sing with inflection That makes you feel I'll convey Some inner truth or vast reflection But I've said nothing so far And I can keep it up for as long as it takes And it don't matter who you are If I'm doing my job then it's your resolve that breaks

| Sep. 3rd, 2007 11:37 pm Looking at my wall, I see some stuff that I could sing about, but not enough... It's been even longer than last time, updating this damn thing. SORRY. Here's the recap of the stuff I was excited about last time: the new house rules, July 4th gig rocked, and Justin still likes the All American Rejects.
New stuff... Harry moved here a little over a month ago. He's living in the basement, and it's awesome because we're an unstoppable bass/drums rock duo whenever we want. Speaking of kickass tunes, I have a recording studio in my basement now (not cramped in the apartment!) and lots of great recording projects are underway. Justin, Joe and I re-recorded some old classics, I recorded Shorthand's new demo, the debut single from The Balsagnas, and have been working with Jeff Hoff and Paul Ambrose on their respective solo projects (not to mention a couple Hathead Jones jam sessions). Work on the next Dan Kelley Christmas album is expected to start very soon -- this year, there are no excuses for lack of an album. It will happen.
Took a road trip to Madison, Wisconsin this weekend to BBQ with Jim. Drove up there with Harry, Fred & Jenn, and got to hane out with lots of cool people up there. Had some great BBQ, booze, and half-drunk singalongs, but most importantly, got to spend 3 days breathing in the spectacular northern air. The temperature really never got outside the 65-80 range the whole time, and it was clear & sunny the whole time, with very limited humidity. Reminds me of going to visit Grandma in the summers up in Minnesota. Including the mosquitos... Also, we encountered 34 state troopers in the less than 300 miles we spent in Illinois on the way home. What... the... fuck.
Just celebrated my 1 year anniversary of employment with S&H Medical Management Services, Inc. Fantastic. I still love my job, and it's still about 1% as stressful as managing Steak n Shake. Speaking of which, I got to hang out with a couple SNS kids the other night -- I smell a reunion party brewing.
I have made a resolution to not record any cover songs until I have written and recorded a few (complete) songs of my own. Come on, I've been single again for a little while, and that's the only time I've ever been able to write songs anyway -- let the rush of songwriting ideas flow in!!!
Gotta get my wisdom teeth taken out this week. That came from nowhere. Awesome. I hope my insurance pays for the whole thing, cuz this nigga's broke as a joke. Thanks student loans, car payments, rent, and credit card still backed up from that ridiculous time of unemployment!!
Three Ded Bugs shows in two weeks. I'm pumped. Who's joining me?
Time to get back to my Boy Meets World marathon before hitting the sack. Goodnight. Current Location: home-o Current Mood: quixotic Current Music: "That Guy" by The Exploding Trick

| Jun. 12th, 2007 12:07 am Now you're calling me up on the phone, so you can have a little whine and a moan... "Don't worry, Justin... That's just a guilty pleasure." "Yeah Dan, you have a lot of those..."
I haven't updated this thing in about 2 months. SORRY.
So I'll be living in a house in less than a month. It's right off Dingledine, about a mile from Joseph T. Pini's stomping grounds. I'll be living with two of my brother's friends, and I think they might actually be more excited about it than I am -- and if you've talked to me in the last month, you know how damn pumped I've been about this place! There will be quite the housewarming BBQ when the time comes, so stay tuned...
If you're not doing anything on the 4th of July, you should come see me play with a group of old fogeys out in Troy. There will be BBQ to die for, fireworks, and of course: Free Bird. I'll be working a drumset rivaling the cock rock greats - my full set, about 2/3 of my friend Chris's set, and about half of my electronic set. I may not be nearly as talented as Neil Peart, but I do PLAY DEM DRUMS!! Let me know if you want directions, it'll be a good time to the max.
I caught Justin singing an All American Rejects song yesterday. That was fun (but not as fun as an orange).
I saw some awesome shows in May. Social Distortion, Cowboy Mouth, +44, Kill Hannah, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers... Pretty badass month. Now I'm broke. Wait, I was broke before. Oh well. TIME FOR BED!! Current Location: home-o Current Mood: quixotic Current Music: "Smile" by Lily Allen

| Apr. 7th, 2007 02:38 am I'm so ugly - that's okay, 'cause so are you ... YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Nirvana tribute was really awesome. I didn't expect to like it, but I forgot that even though they're an easy target to mock, I really liked Nirvana a lot. Also C-Nug played cello with them, and I got to be his beer guy (pouring beer into his mouth while he played cello - the crowd loved it). Also I got to drink all of Kurt Cobain's beer.
Lots of good shows coming up in the next 2 months: Vast, Hit the Lights, Social Distortion, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, Cowboy Mouth, +44, MxPx, Okgo...
My lease is up in July. Before that time, I will find a house to rent in this general vicinity, in which I will reside with Justin Dixon and Ben Howard and we will make the world's most amazing music ever. If you know of anybody wanting to rent out a house, please let me know. I've got some good leads on STLToday and stuff like that, but anything will help... I can't wait to have an actual band again. I will be the happiest person you've ever met.
I can't believe we never recorded a MrKop album... We had some really good samples from that weekend we all worked together. Also, "Where Have All the Cobblers Gone?" is a wasted set of lyrics because it was never actually recorded! Ugh!!
I finished the Japan tour pictures on DedBugs.com this week. That's exciting. Greatest webmaster of all time. The 13 year old Dan Kelley would cream his pants knowing he'd one day be running the official Ded Bugs website. Haha
BAMF! is going on tour this summer, and they're enlisting Two Sheets Studios to record a full length album for them to sell on said tour. It will be very very time consuming but also very awesome because those kids rule.
Time for bed now. Peace off. Current Location: home-o Current Mood: quixotic Current Music: "Lithium" by Nirvana

| Mar. 8th, 2007 12:29 am If they revive them - just sit there, just smile there: make them thankful for every breath... I finally put up a picture update! I started it at the beginning of January, so it's already 2 months outdated, but maybe I'll get better about it. CHECK IT TOTALLY OUT!!!!
Also, I just found out that Ben Howard is coming to town this weekend, and is staying for a week to finish up The Exploding Trick's first album and to take "band" pictures... Sweet. Also, Jen Kirk should be in town this weekend. It'll be a good time.
Next weekend is St. Pat's. Get excited! Current Location: home-o Current Mood: quixotic Current Music: "Sadie" by Alkaline Trio

| Mar. 4th, 2007 05:33 pm Cruisin in my barracuda, watchin horror movies in my room, I'll vote for more monsters next election Shit's pretty rad. I realized I don't update this thing nearly as much as I did two years ago... Granted, I'm far less gay than I was then (of course, that's very debatable)... I was looking over some old entries, laughing my ass off, and realized I should put more in this thing...
I've been learning some more web design stuff, kind of by the seat of my pants, because I'm the new webmaster for my favorite band in the whole world, the Ded Bugs. Hopefully this means I'll have a more interesting website myself (which hasn't changed its format since 1996) sometime in the coming weeks... Also, a better site for Two Sheets Studios...
Hathead Jones has an acoustic gig coming up very soon. It's supposed to be Friday March 23rd at the Pit in Wentzville. I'll keep you posted once that gets confirmed. It'll be entertainment for the eyes as well as the ears. I swear.
I've gotta run, because I have a very important gig at Cicero's: I'm doing guest rap vocals with local ska favorites, BAMF!, who are opening up for the very rad MC Lars. Peace off. Current Location: home-o Current Music: "Primary Ingredient: F-U-N!" by the Ded Bugs

| Feb. 16th, 2007 12:17 am When I can smile, I'll let you know... Few people can begin an encore by playing kickass acoustic versions of two songs, and then start a third, only to say "ah, fuck it" because his guitar is out of tune and leave the crowd wondering for 5 minutes if he's actually done, yet still have left the crowd ridiculously pleased.
The Lemonheads played probably the most perfect setlist I could have ever asked for. I know I've only been a hardcore fan for about a month and a half (I've loved the album It's a Shame About Ray for years, but it wasn't until I heard at the end of December that they were coming to town (or that they were even back together!) that I got into anything else), but I still will consider that one of the best sets I've ever seen a band put on.
The drummer had my energy, yet with much more talent (not that they're hard songs to play, but still...). The bassist looked like the dude from Local H (but wasn't). Evan Dando - well, he was Evan Dando. I think he said all of 2 words to the crowd, and spent all his energy rocking the fuck out. There wasn't a single song I didn't know and love.
Thank you, Lemonheads. You left me satisfied. (That's what she said) Current Location: home-o Current Mood: quixotic Current Music: "If I Could Talk, I'd Tell You" by the Lemonheads

| Jan. 29th, 2007 05:14 pm Gavin Rossdale... Shakespeare of modern times. "In the middle of a world on a fish hook... You're the wave."
"Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow."
"Blood is like wine, unconscious all the time."
Seriously... every time I listen to Bush (or Institute for that matter), I sit in disbelief - getting rocked so hard by lyrics that are even more ridiculous than lyrics by They Might Be Giants or Joe Pini...
